Without a doubt, each user of Popcorn Time is provided multiple notices that they are downloading and installing software for the express purpose of committing theft and contributing the ability of others to commit theft by furthering the Bit Torrent piracy network.Īs far as the Danish Popcorn Time instructional site owners go, the potential prison time is stiffer still. Users should be fully aware that when they watch Popcorn Time video, they’re breaking the law, the complaint points out, given that Popcorn Time’s home page and its FAQ both warn users about the illegality of downloading and streaming copyrighted material. Possessing burglary tools is a misdemeanor under Oregon law, punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of $6,250 (about £3,980). The suit claims that the 11 people it seeks to unmask are guilty of having the equivalent of burglary tools, given that the IP addresses associated with them have been used with Popcorn Time – an application whose sole purpose is to stream stolen video. In the lawsuit, the movie makers behind The Cobbler claim that the movie has been hit by “significant” piracy and has been distributed “countless times” worldwide, with over 10,000 instances of infringing activity having been traced to Oregon. Once revealed, those 11 will stand accused of violating the Copyright Act. The complaint (PDF) was filed on 16 August and is looking for a subpoena to force Comcast to reveal the identities of 11 users behind certain IP addresses. Skip across the Atlantic and on out to Oregon, and you’ll find that a criminal complaint connected to Popcorn Time was recently filed in Oregon District Court. Their sites have been shut down, with their domains placed under the control of the state prosecutor. The men stand accused of – and reportedly have confessed to – having distributed guides on how to obtain illegal content online. Thus there is hopefully a deterrent effect against feeling confident that you can sit wherever you want and try to implement such things. This has consequences and it also conveys the message that this behavior is illegal. It shows that can be revealed by the police. Inspector Michael Hellensberg of the Danish fraud squad told local media that the case was significant because: It’s a whack-a-mole game though, as forks of the immensely popular open-source project just keep springing up.Īccording to TorrentFreak, on Tuesday, 18 August, local police in Denmark arrested two men, in their 30s, who operated sites that gave instructions and guides on using Popcorn Time. It was abruptly shuttered by its original developers on 14 March, 2014 due to pressure from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). The UK High Court also ordered ISPs to block the app in April 2014. Popcorn Time allows users to stream pirated movies and TV shows without having to worry about deleting incriminating torrent files afterwards. Popcorn Time has gone through quite a few iterations, originally, it was a multi-platform, free software BitTorrent client that offered an integrated media player. Meanwhile, in the US, movie makers have filed a lawsuit against 11 Popcorn Time users, alleging that they used the software to watch the 2014 Adam Sandler comedy The Cobbler. The law is moving to crush Popcorn Time – the video streaming site that’s been dubbed the “Netflix for pirated movies” – like so many crunchy snacks littering the floor of a crowded movie theater.īoots are stomping on multinational fronts: police in Denmark, for one, arrested two men just for providing online guides on how to use the site, even though the men’s sites hosted neither copyright-infringing material nor linked to any. If you're running tight right now, the $90 Kindle is a solid recommendation. Let's start with your budget, as that's the easiest way to make this call. We're looking into testing more competitors to find them a better option. But for the reader who doesn't want to use an Amazon-made device? The Glowlight 4 may be the best Kindle alternative for them. Oh, and loading up library books, proved to be a frustrating process. That said, for a $140 e-reader, it's lacking waterproofing, which the Paperwhite offers. One of its best features is it's no-fuss reading interface, which gets out of your way when it's time to read (Amazon could do this, and we wish it would). And while the Nook Glowlight 4 isn't better than any Kindle, it's got minor tweaks and updates that give us reason to give it some attention here. Īmazon doesn't run the whole e-reader world, so we occasionally test competitors' e-readers. Read our full Amazon Kindle Kids Edition review. Oh and it's even got helpful vocabulary building tools and a free year (a $60 value) of Amazon's Amazon Kids+ (fka FreeTime Unlimited), which has thousands of titles. The Kindle Kids Edition was so popular that Amazon's making a Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition, which we will review soon. You get the same 6-inch, 167 ppi display and front lighting, and the display is still inset, not flush with the frame. Otherwise, the Kindle Kids Edition is the same tablet as the 2019 Kindle. In fact, the Kids Edition is so close to our ideal Kindle interface, we wish Amazon would offer it as a mode for adults who just want to read the book, and not dabble in the Goodreads community. Even better, there are no lock screen ads. Kids will like it for the colored cases, while parents will love Amazon's 2-year no-questions-asked warranty. Īmazon's latest Kindle improves on the $90 Kindle by adding what's missing and chipping away at the cruft that fills up a regular Kindle. Read our full Amazon Kindle (2022) review. Unless you really need a waterproof Kindle, it’s tough to advocate spending more than the $100 you'll pay for a new Amazon Kindle (2022). It’s lightweight and comfortable to hold, the display is bright and crisp - a massive improvement over earlier models - and the battery lasts for ages. Ultimately though, the Kindle 2022 is probably the best Kindle for most people. Admittedly, if Amazon fixed those things there would be no reason to get the Paperwhite, so while we're disappointed we aren't shocked. Also, our reviewer missed having the option adjust the warmth of the display light, another minor but meaningful Paperwhite feature - though if you’re fine with using dark mode it’s easy to move past that shortcoming. The fact that the Kindle 2022 isn’t waterproof is probably the biggest differentiator between it and the more expensive Paperwhite. That’s not to say there aren’t improvements that could be made. Being locked into Amazon’s ecosystem is a drag, but you can’t really knock the Kindle for that. The Amazon Kindle (2022) is nearly a perfect device for what it is, and some of its flaws are more down to Amazon than the device itself. Read our full Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2021) review. It worked just as well as it did before when we took it out. Our testing of the Paperwhite 2021's waterproofing included a 20 minute bath in our sink. That said, it's gained one of the Oasis' once unique features: display warmth. The Paperwhite costs slightly more than half as much as the $250 Kindle Oasis, coming in at $139 ($10 more than in previous years). Faster charging doesn't appear to be on the table, but the microUSB port has been around for way too long, and is often fragile, so we're happy to see it go. It's a welcome change if only for the reversible port. And it's still got a great waterproofing (IPX8-rated) protection.Īfter the larger display, the big change this year is the move from microUSB charging to USB-C. While it's still a super-sharp 300-ppi display, it's now supported by an array of 17 LED backlights, for incredibly even lighting. The bezels are also smaller, so the device didn't have to grow too much to accommodate the growth from a 6-inch panel. It's got the same basic look as previous Kindles and Kindle Paperwhite models, a matte black shell and an e-ink screen, but this time it's larger, with a 6.8-inch panel. Small changes lead to great products staying great, and such is the case with the new Kindle Paperwhite (2021). Total rewards at P&G include salary + bonus (if applicable) + benefits.
